5 Questions with Publicis Groupe CEE Lioness: Vessela Apostolova

As part of Publicis Groupe Central & Eastern Europe (CEE)’s 'Embrace Gender Equity' initiative that was launched during this year’s International Women’s Day on March 8th, the company created a special series 'Publicis Groupe CEE Lioness' designed to showcase and spotlight its many female talent and leaders across the CEE region, celebrating their experiences and important roles they play within the company. Get to know the Publicis Groupe CEE Lionesses through their stories in this series.

1. Can you share your story with us, how have you gotten to where you are today in your profession?

Vessela> I was lucky to have the best mentors along the way. Not only experienced professionals, but smart people from all ages and backgrounds that led me by example, simple words, shared stories, rises and falls. I have been part of the Lion’s family for 20 years now, starting from events and promotions during my university years. I went on to deep dive into media planning, account management, client service, new business, deputy chief of media positions, through creative transformation, leading the communication business in Publicis Groupe Bulgaria and now “first among equals” (and on some occasions, even smarter people than me). My story is about the goal to make something better, by becoming better along the way, but it never was to grow in hierarchy in the first place.

2. What has been your most memorable experience in your career so far?

Vessela> It is not just one and I still believe that there are a lot more to come. They are always connected with someone believing in me and my potential. That is what makes people fly high and I hope that I am that someone for my team.

3. Similarly, what was the most challenging moment and how did you overcome it?

Vessela> Never had an unchallenging moment. Being part of a smaller market, makes you like Shiva all the time, to make everything with less people, less money, at least until you scale. That will be my biggest challenge, grow beyond the market limitations. 

4. What are your most important tips on achieving success?

Vessela> Inner motivation is key. If there is no seed to grow within you, miracles will not happen, no matter the sun, the water and the nice words coming from your boss. Always strive for something bigger than you can imagine and obstacles will seem to disappear. Especially those that are your internal barriers.

5. What are your tips for younger female talent embarking on the journey you’re already on?

Vessela> Speak freely, act boldly and respect others!
