2013 Sounds Great at Factory Studios

Better than a new year’s resolution is a new year’s challenge, which is how January rolled at Factory Studios.

AMV BBDO invited Factory to design the sound for new the Guinness TV spot, part of the ‘Made of More’ campaign. Set in the bohemia of 1890's, ‘Clock’, written by Alex Grieve, tells the story of a Clock influencing the passing of time for the benefit of the public. Anthony Moore & Tom Joyce at Factory Studios worked on creating the personality of the ‘Clock’ and establish it in the film using voice and sound design techniques. “Our voiceover Mark Strong, was able to deliver a performance that captured the Eastern European character of the Clock and also synced his read to fit the metronome of the Clock’s authentic sound design. Original clock sfx were sourced and employed in the sound design to give the film an organic sound that sat perfectly with the black and white visuals of this well crafted period piece.”

The Factory Studios team were equally called upon by Wieden+Kennedy London, to put together a new global campaign for Honda to promote its new Civic range. The sound design was required to enhance the differences of the two worlds depicted in the film and display the versatility of the Honda Civic. “The car sfx were recorded on set and then reconstructed in the studio to emphasize the key message of each scene. We then used specific panning techniques to ‘spin’ the sound of each scene to perfectly match the movement in the visual.“- Anthony Moore, Factory Studios. Music was composed by SIREN and mixed from stems for the final versions.

The New Year also saw the Studios team dedicated to BBH and The Guardian's ‘We Own the Weekend’ blockbuster spoof campaign starring Hugh Grant. Sam Robson, senior sound designer at Factory Studios, and judge on this year’s D&AD panel, talks about this tongue & cheek ad: “We were asked to get involved in this huge project just before Xmas, with the notion of creating something very special in an extremely tight turnaround. To get ahead in terms of preparation, we created rough soundbeds beforehand using placeholder music, VO and sfx and cut these to the durations required, whilst also creating a palette of sfx to choose from. With Factory sound designer Jon Clarke, two studios worked side by side through the night and 5.1 cinema mixes created to bring the "movie trailer" style spots to life. The end result is something everyone at BBH and Factory are very proud of and proves what great things can be achieved in a short time frame.”
