Data Engineer Role

The Data Engineer is a middle-weight position within Armadillo, and will help maintain and improve our data systems and processes to ensure Armadillo continues to offer best-in-class data services to our clients.

The Data Engineer role is especially vital at ensuring our analytical and campaign teams have the data they require to uncover actionable insights from our client’s data, measure KPIs and ROIs, and develop successful CRM strategies and campaigns. As the Data Engineer, you will support the wider agency with building solutions both internally and for clients to make Armadillo’s data systems and processes more effective and efficient.

Data Engineer Responsibilities

  • Manage manual and automated data transfers, extractions and transformations ensuring the right data is loaded into the right system at the right time
  • QA inbound and outbound data to ensure it is fit for purpose
  • Understand and overcome the complexities and challenges of dealing with billions of rows of customers and transactional data efficiently and securely
  • Maintain and extend existing data systems and processes, seeking optimisation and automation where possible
  • Manage cloud databases and related infrastructure, seeking to ensure high availability and security at all times
  • Support other users of the databases through knowledge sharing and access controls
  • Interpret client and internal project requirements and design appropriate solutions. Projects include (but are not limited to): building APIs and connections; real-time data processing and augmentation; database builds; report builds; process automation; querying data
  • Build solutions that meet requirements using Armadillo’s existing tools or by building bespoke pipelines, software and scripts
  • Writing project specifications and documentation suitable for audiences with different levels of technical understanding.


  • 3-5 years’ experience in a data or software engineering role
  • Excellent skills in Python and SQL, plus experience using source control tools
  • Excellent problem solving skills for overcoming technically complex challenges
  • Excellent organisational skills for managing projects, tasks and changing priorities
  • Excellent communication skills for keeping different stakeholders informed
  • Working knowledge of AWS tools is ideal (or equivalent cloud systems)
  • Working knowledge of Databricks is ideal (or equivalent data tools)
  • Degree in Computer Science is ideal (or equivalent)
  • Some understanding of PHP would be beneficial as occasional use is required

  • Hybrid environment – 3 days in our central Bristol office / 2 days remote
