PROBLEM

According to UNESCO, Artificial intelligence feeds on biased datasets, amplifying the existing anti-female biases in our societies. MIT Technology Review states that when asked to create images of professionals, AI image-generating tools such as Midjourney, DALL·E 2 and Stable Diffusion think 97% of them are men.

IDEA & EXECUTION

Aurora50, the vanguard of workplace gender balance, diversity, equity, and inclusivity, developed an innovative solution called Fixing the bAIs. Using AI image generation tools such as Midjourney, DALL·E 2 and Stable Diffusion tools to build an extensive collection of inclusive images featuring women across professions. We removed gender labels from the metadata (file names, tags, and descriptions) to ensure unbiased representation. We shared this powerful database on the website fixingthebias.com which then disseminated it to stock image banks, social media, openly accessible image-text dataset and AI training datasets. Additionally, we created a lifelong Discord community that tirelessly generates images to fix the bias, one profession at a time, reshaping the future of technology.

IMPACT

Fixing the bAIs is hailed as a solution to address gender bias in AI, at global summits and councils. It has inspired 52 countries to create new laws and policies for AI, aiming to establish a comprehensive global framework for inclusive AI regulations. This support sparks a paradigm shift, influencing gender-conscious AI laws. Notably, the EU's AI Act (world’s first comprehensive AI law), announced on 16 June 2023, recognises bias in datasets as an unacceptable risk. Nine datasets, including Liaon 5B, (a dataset of 5.85 billion image-text pairs, the biggest openly accessible image-text dataset in the world and the primary dataset for AI image-generating tools such as Midjourney, DALL·E 2 and Stable Diffusion) have undergone training, while major stock image companies contribute by incorporating our images for free download. With a reach of 4.4 billion and $4.5 million in earned media, our initiative has gained substantial impact and recognition.
