In Lebanon, the sentence for rape is as little as 0-5 years, which is comparable to robbery or consuming illegal drugs. And in Lebanon, just like every other country in the world, the laws are a reflection of the values commonly held by its citizens, so it’s no surprise that the patriarchal society in the country considers rape an un-serious crime, and raped women dishonorable to their families.
Survivors of sexual assault are told not to spread their “dirty laundry” – an expression meaning “don’t talk about shameful matters” like rape - leaving survivors silenced and without justice.
