The film is based on true stories, it follows the story of a brother and sister who have been orphaned by war. After their home is bombed and their parents killed, they embark on a terrifying hunt for safe haven. As they venture on their journey they are threatened with conflict, sexual exploitation and violence. The strains of the song’s chorus, “I’m a survivor, I’m going to make it,” can be heard throughout their journey. After a long and terrifying journey on a small boat they end up in a refugee camp where they seem to find some sort of safety. But the war is not over - the camp is attacked and fire spreads. We were asked to bring the story alive with the sound. Being sensitive to the narrative and without leaning on movie cliches or music to do it. We were tasked to give the film rhythm as the story unfolds and to help the edit by creating shape and tempo. Our role was to create a soundtrack that matched the imagery and film. The pace of the story dramatically shifts throughout the ad and the sound plays a pivotal role in the drama.
From the opening scenes, the tension builds, propelled by the sound which was created from scratch using sound design, foley or manipulating sfx. The sound design helps to drive the rise and fall of the narrative and helps the viewer feel embedded in the story. The film is cinematic with an ever moving range of emotions. As the tension builds, the sound brings the narrative to life. To create the best possible sound design and mix for the film.
