Director Simon Frederick approached Blind Pig as collaborators for his series “They’ve Gotta Have Us”, following Blind Pig’s work on his previous show “Black is the New Black”.
“They’ve Gotta Have Us” is an extraordinary and highly prescient show that features candid, funny and moving first person accounts from black artists working in Hollywood. Contributors ranged from the pioneering Harry Belafonte, who literally stood shoulder to shoulder with MLK in the American civil rights movement, through Whoopi Goldberg and Laurence Fishburne, right up to the modern day with the likes of John Boyega and Nathalie Emmanuel. Blind Pig came on board with a bit of an open brief - we designed the show title and title sequence - then director Simon Frederick developed the great concept that each one hour episode would contain a sequence of original animation that would depict a story from one contributor per episode.Blind Pig animated an account of costume designer Ruth Carter and here early work with Spike Lee, Cuba Gooding Jnr’s talking about “Boyz n the Hood” - and John Boyega recalls being cast in Star Wars. Other animated sequences accompany Harry Belafonte’s stories. The animated sequences were designed and animated entirely in Blind Pig by lead artists Chrisitine Peters, Niall High and Nica Harrison. They’ve Gotta Have Us was released globally on Netflix in February 2020.
