The Campaign
To launch Nike’s new PhantomVSN football boot,
we created a tongue-in-cheek campaign to warn the world of the boot’s deadly
precision.
An epic two-and-a-half-minute film tells the
story of a mysterious player who, through word of mouth, becomes an urban
legend of terrifying proportions.
Ahead of the film’s launch, a social campaign of more than 200 pieces of content also seeded supernatural myths around real Phantom players and the boot.
The Music Brief
We were briefed to find music that would tie the storylines together, that
would keep the pace, that wouldn’t interfere with the VOs and that would
substantiate the suspense, darkness and theatrical elements of the mysterious
player.
The Music Challenge
We soon discovered that it wasn’t possible to find one single track that could
mirror the diversity of the different storylines, safeguard the viewer’s
attention and meet the theatrical and raw atmosphere all at the same time.
Instead, we found that a mash-up of songs would perfectly match the mash-up of
storylines. However, we were walking on a very fine line where a mash-up of
songs would either make the film or break it by being too overbearing.
The Music Solution
If one song couldn’t embody both theatre and an upbeat pace, then perhaps two
songs could? The key was eventually in finding two songs from the same artist,
which worked like musical glue to the story. We then found the best of both
worlds within the discography of Justice. Justice, known for their symbolism,
absurdist approach and electrifying music, turned out to be a 100% match. We
worked with the original scores of Justice’s classical opening riff ‘Heavy
Metal’ and ‘Genesis’s enthusing beats to create a new composition customised to
the film.
The Music Result
A captivating two and a half minutes of visual ecstasy supported by a driving
and theatrical soundtrack. A mash-up of songs for a mash-up of stories.
