In September 2017 we launched an exciting initiative, #ANightForChange,
which would engage eight cities and eight communities around the world in a
single night of international artistic expression. However, a week prior to the
global activation, the earthquake of 19th September struck one of the
destinations, Mexico City, devastating the artistic community of La Roma
Condesa. In the difficult months following, community members reported not only
a decline in economic/social activity in the area but a perceived fear of
further damage. We decided we would still return to the area but this time we would
create a bigger impact by solidifying a community - rebuilding art, commerce
and confidence.
Expanding on the original mural planned with one artist, three artists
(one local and two international, who took part in the global launch) came to
the heart of the affected neighbourood to convey three different
interpretations of hope, strength and positivity. A community workshop was also
run by the local artist to bring people an outlet to express themselves and
bond over their experiences together, reminding each other of the strength
found in unity.
In order to engage the community further, a live event was devised to
coincide with the unveiling of the murals that would also drive commerce back
into local businesses and therefore the community. Local businesses and
individuals including food and beverage vendors, local DJs and a local charity
(working in photography for the blind) all came together to celebrate the neighbourhood
and its renewed colour. Crowds returned to their once much-loved district.
