UNESCO’s “The Next Normal” needed to be told by numerous voices from real-life interview scenarios such as journalists, vox-pops, in-hospital interviews, close-mic confessions, and narrative reflections of past events. First, we scripted extra material around the information on screen from official sources. Our next challenge was to quickly and effectively record over forty voices (from six countries and seven different languages) during an international lockdown. Besides professionals, we had friends, family and colleagues helping out. Within one week, each recorded their part using a variety of recording techniques, qualities and equipment, ranging from iPhones to home studios. We made our selections to ensure a balance of mediums and performers, and created a coherent narrative, which was supported with sound effects to add depth to each story. Some tonal melding + a massive pulsing, dreamy score and the soundscape was complete.
