In the last ten years, more than 800 journalists around the world have been killed for their work, a number that tragically continues to rise.  In contrast, Norway has the world’s highest level of press freedom, partly due to our extensive media diversity. 

Narvesen, Norway’s most iconic newsstand chain, established in 1894, has been a key contributor to that diversity, by offering a wide range of newspapers and magazines from all over the world.

On world press freedom day 2024, Narvesen wanted to remind Norwegians that the freedom we enjoy here can not be taken for granted. That’s why we united with Reporters without Borders and the Nobel Peace Center under a simple, yet powerful message: putting your name in a byline can also mean putting it on someone’s hit list. In Norway’s largest newspapers and on billboards all around the capital, a simple “e” was added to real bylines, demonstrating that putting your name on an article can also mean putting it on someone’s hit list. Each ad told the true story of a reporter who was killed for merely carrying out their journalistic duties.
