Director Adu Lalouschek's latest film for National Geographic and DHL puts a spotlight on the Sapeuses (women sapeurs) of the Congo.
The documentary follows National Geographic photographer Yagazie Emezi as she documents and interviews the women who take part in dressing up in elegant and stylish clothes like no one else. Women like Messani Grace, the president of Mavula Shape, who talks about her own experiences and journey, from at first feeling ashamed about dressing up to then feeling liberated and enjoying the freedom and expression that comes with changing clothes.
Adu’s wonderful direction breathes extra joy and colour into the film without compromising a compelling and honest portrayal of other people's stories. Focusing on the women who take part in these celebrations of expression we get an intimate look into their lives.
