Running from October 4th to 22nd, LFF Expanded offers audiences a programme of exciting immersive art and extended realities. This year’s lineup collates 14 projects from around the world across multiple London venues.
‘MURALS’ runs from October 6th to 22nd (excluding Monday 16th), at Bargehouse at Oxo Tower Wharf, within the cultural hub of the South Bank. Tickets can be booked here.
High res projections place CG scans of Banksy artwork upon devastated homes and architectural sites around Ukraine, combining the use of light, sound, innovative 3D scanning technologies, and Unreal Engine. The murals – which Banksy painted on destroyed buildings during a trip to Ukraine in November 2022 – highlight how everyday life perseveres in the face of destruction, and that one day, life will blossom from the ruins once more.
The project, a non-profit collaboration between a number of international vendors and colleagues, was initiated by Ukrainian 3D artist Artem Ivanenko after he scanned the remains of his own town. These detailed models are intended as scientific, educational evidence of Russia’s crimes, confronting viewers with the reality of the conflict.
Spain’s Tigrelab handled art direction and CG/Unreal animation, while virtual production was done by Maciej Żemojcin at Pixel Race. The experience was produced by Radosława Bardes at Poland’s ATM Virtual and Ukraine’s Mriya Production, with the backing of Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture.
‘MURALS’ originally premiered at Cannes Film Festival, earlier this year.
Daniel Shapiro, director and co-owner at Aggressive, comments: "It’s an honour to be included in BFI’s program in London, and to receive the attention and support from so many here. This piece, sadly, remains increasingly timely as the war and the horrors emerging from it continue."
