Appointment follows creative advertising agency’s merger with Grand
Looking to add to its leadership team during a period of dynamic growth, premier Bay area advertising creative firm John McNeil Studio (JMS) announced the appointment of Carolyn Shulman as Executive Vice President and Managing Director.

Shulman’s addition comes just as JMS completes its merger with San Francisco-based boutique agency, Grand.

Shulman joins JMS from Universal McCann San Francisco, where she was a managing partner. During her career in advertising at such operations as Ogilvy & Mather, FCB, and McCann Worldgroup, Shulman has managed client relationships for market leading companies such as Microsoft, HP, Agilent, AT&T Wireless, Sega, HBO, Showtime, AAA Insurance, Wells Fargo, PG&E, Budget Gourmet, Coca-Cola and Pfizer.

In her newly created position, Shulman will manage the day-to-day operations and key client relationships for the combined 100-person shop, which will operate under the John McNeil Studio name, while also spearheading new business development efforts.

“Carolyn has more than a decade of experience leading global accounts and internal teams in every area that modern marketing touches—from general, to demand to social to media to planning, operations and production,” said JMS President/Chief Creative Officer John McNeil. “Carolyn’s expertise will be invaluable as we continue to aggressively expand our business in both consumer and B2B advertising.”

Shulman’s hire caps an impressive run for JMS that includes not only the merger with Grand, but also key recent client wins such as luxury a consignment sales site, The RealReal, and Cambria Winery.

“Given all the changes taking place in branding and advertising, this merger could not come at a better time for both firms and should lead to tremendous opportunities going forward,” said Grand Founder/Creative Director Gerald Lewis. “Together we can offer clients access to top-notch creative talent and provide them with new and innovative ways to manage their brand and deliver relevant messages.”

As part of the merger, Lewis will become JMS Group Creative Director. Lewis began his career on the IBM team at Ogilvy & Mather and went on to develop worldwide campaigns for Microsoft as Global Creative Director during a career that eventually led to the founding of Grand.

The newly combined JMS offers a full-range of services including strategy, advertising, corporate identity, demand generation, web design/UX, application development, animation, and production, to a client portfolio that now includes CA, Juniper, Google, Aetna, TOMS Shoes, Logitech, Microsoft, Polycom, The Economist and Bloomberg.
