The Ascent Of Woman

We were given the honour to produce the creative package for Dr. Amanda Foreman’s acclaimed four-part documentary series originally created for BBC2. The series documents the crucial role of women in society over the course of 10,000 years and was the first ever documentary to present the history of women from the dawn of civilisation to the modern day, highlighting extremes of freedom and oppression, inclusion and exclusion. Art and the written word have both been priceless instruments in communicating, documenting and preserving moments of great cultural and historical significance and we felt these basic ingredients would work well to capture the cultivated tone of the series. In the process of creating the package we purposefully made a decision to use traditional calligraphy writing as our visual influence. We felt this was both representative of the historical nature of the series and combined with the tactile quality of the paper finish, helped to capture the authenticity we wanted to convey.
