Humorous piece created by Above and Beyond was produced by Blinkink and directed by Joseph Mann and Rune Spaans

Pilgrims Choice’s new film, ‘Charlie’s Dream’ takes us on a surreal journey through someone’s cheese fuelled dreamscape.

It has long been rumoured that our favourite dairy produce can encourage the most vivid and bizarre dreams.  Above & Beyond joined forces with Blink Ink to create an engrossing mixture of CGI, Live Performance and puppetry to recreate one consumer’s real dream.

As the music company working on the project, Soviet Science had to ask themselves, "What does a cheese dream sound like?”.

Company founder, Scuta Salamanca comments,  "It was tightly scored to picture to heighten the surrealness of the dream. As the action moves from scene to scene we follow it adding weird and wonderful elements including dog barks and time signature changes to make a really interesting score".

The project was itself a ‘dream’ for the bespoke music company, who note "It’s rare to get a really great creative concept or idea that is part of the nation’s folklore - cheese gives you weird dreams - so naturally used as the basis of the campaign. What an inspirational starting point to think creatively about a score!! It allowed us to really integrate unusual sounds in to a fantastical score that hits every mark on screen. And it’s great to have Brian Blessed as the VO”.

The project’s composer adds, "It’s not often that you get to write a piece that takes you on a journey filled with magicians, abstract and cinematic concepts. The music really needed to heighten the narrative, yet not overpower the voiceover.

The challenge was to seamlessly blend different styles of music together, starting off gentle and mysterious then gradually becoming more grand, introducing the whole orchestra and choir as Charlie's arms ascended to the sky. Once we see the pirate we needed to be in a different place musically, yet not realise how we got there, just as how one would effortlessly drift through scenarios in an actual dream."
