Recess Films has launched in Los Angeles and New York, with a diverse roster of established and emerging directors. The company will produce work across genres, including commercials, films, series, and branded content.
Industry veteran John Duffin will serve as Recess’ managing director. As an executive at Epoch Films for 17 years, Duffin’s philosophy of nurturing developing talent alongside established filmmakers helped launch the careers of many of the industry's most successful directors. “I want to nurture talent and create an environment where they can be fearless,” says Duffin. “I see the production company’s role as a community where creativity is valued and has a chance to develop and grow. Recess is an extension of that spirit.”
Duffin’s partners in Recess are Jonathan Notaro and Devin Brook of Brand New School. Recess will operate independently from BNS, with its own roster of directors.
“As a creatively-led company, BNS has built a culture for artists that champions creativity and discovery in the commercial world,” commented Jonathan Notaro, founder of BNS. “John shares that artist-driven philosophy and Recess is an environment where directors will thrive.”
BNS managing partner Devin Brook adds: “Recess Films is evolving how a production company operates in this changing media landscape. Our process is more collaborative, connected, and inspiring for both our directors and clients.”
Recess’ roster of directors – which includes Ahmed Klink, Alastair McKevitt, Alexandra Gavillet, Fernando Cardenas, Marcus Ubungen, and Rory Kelleher – is known for a diverse and award-winning body of work, including recent collaborations for clients including Apple, Nike, Gatorade, Beats, and Facebook.
Recess is represented on the East Coast by Miss Smith, on the West Coast by Melissa Ross, and in the Midwest by Sue Rosen.
