Zaiba Jabbar directs spot commissioned by Little Dot Studios

Series 6 of Channel 4’s ‘Random Acts’, hosted by Mae Martin, kicked off on 1st November with weekly episodes every Thursday at midnight. Episode 3 of ‘Random Acts’ features ‘Apple Z’, directed by Zaiba Jabbar and Produced at PRETTYBIRD by Paulette Caletti with director of photography Joseph Gainsborough. ‘Apple Z’ was commissioned by Little Dot Studios for Random Acts.

‘Apple Z’ will air tonight at midnight on Channel 4.

The film ‘Apple Z’ will appear on Channel 4 and Instagram simultaneously. Director Zaiba shot one film on an Arri Alexa Mini, and one on an iPhone: the two films are meant to be viewed in tandem, one on a screen and one on your phone. This style of shooting in two different formats and showing on two different platforms creates an interactive piece that simulates the multi-screen era we are living through.

‘Apple Z’ is directed by Zaiba Jabbar, a PRETTYBIRD collaborator and award-winning film director, independent curator and founder of Hervisions.  Zaiba’s work brings a forward thinking visual narrative to commercial commissions, music videos, and fashion films. Paulette Caletti recently produced BBC Three’s Body Language Series and Aphex Twin ‘T69 Collapse’ music video.

‘Apple Z’ features dancer, choreographer and performer Duran Abdullah, also known as Dee Dee, who pioneered a UK dance style known as 'Shway Style', created by street dance icon and Soul Train legend 'Shabba-Doo'. The music is by Gyles Bartle and Welsh Pop/R&B artist Marged Sion.

Zaiba describes ‘Apple Z’ as: "A hungover woman’s movements the morning after the night before become warped, and another realm is within reach and trying to make contact. This INside/OUT nature of the 2 correlating videos shot simultaneously resonates with the daily multiple screen exposure and selfie culture we are so accustomed to today. We need to be to embrace and be mindful of the future of multi viewing and capabilities of this digital journey we are on.”
