Production will use 3D stereoscopy

In collaboration with the Dutch production company Imagine Nation, Platige Image will develop an innovative stage production employing 3D stereoscopy. Sky will be the third theatrical effort developed as part of the 3D Live Theatre concept devised by the Polish company. It is a part of a content delivery strategy realised by Platige Image.

‘Sky’ is set to premiere on April 3, 2016 at the Theater Amsterdam. The Dutch want to tap the incredible experience in producing spectacles combining traditional theatre and cutting-edge technologies that the Polish company has accrued over the years to develop a truly groundbreaking stage performance that will attract viewers of all ages. 3D stereoscopy and advanced animation technologies will facilitate the creation of set designs and scenes depicting the surrealist visions of the protagonist, as well augment the scenes taking place in the real world.

Sky was created by Robin de Levita, a theatrical producer responsible for numerous Broadway and West End plays; Kees Abrahams, a TV producer renowned for his work on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and Take It or Leave It; John Ewbank, musician and songwriter who worked with Lionel Richie and Armin van Buuren; and Marco Borsato, one of the most famous singers in the Netherlands.

The set designs will be developed by Boris Kudlicka, one of the most renowned set designers in Poland. A longtime collaborator of the Warsaw National Opera and director Mariusz Treliński, Kudlicka has also worked with numerous other distinguished opera houses across the globe, including Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Washington, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, Bratislava, and Valencia. Piotr Sikora will be responsible for handling production matters at Platige Image, while Rafał Sadowy will serve as director of animation and 3D stereoscopy.

“We want to fully utilize the incredible potential of the technology and hardware that the Theater Amsterdam has at its disposal,” says Rafał Sadowy. “The 60-meter-long panoramic screen will give us a 180-degree viewing angle, allowing us to display set designs not only from the front of the stage, but also from the sides and even beam it down from the ceiling. The same characters will appear in both of the worlds that the play takes place in, the real and the surreal one, but will have different appearance in each. 3D stereoscopy and animation techniques will enable us to create the two worlds and remove any trace of fable-like qualities or characteristics from the surreal one.”

The concept of 3D Live Theatre was conceived in collaboration with Janusz Józefowicz, during the development of Polita, his play staged in Poland, Russia, and Germany. Later, the concept was expanded during the production of Romeo and Juliet, another play helmed by Józefowicz, that was developed for the St. Petersburg theatre. A special unit inside Platige Image, called Platige Entertainment, was established to handle development of new technologies for live entertainment purposes.
