Passion Pictures Melbourne directors Tulips and Chimneys joined forces with The Royals to create a sumptuous new spot for Natural Chip Company.
A lover of the Australian landscape, and renowned for the creation of fantastical worlds via her sculptures and art installations, South African director, Ree Treweek was excited by the opportunity to dive into the world of weird and wonderful local flora and fauna.
"We certainly learnt a lot about Australian animals and their habitats... over the course of the project our WIPs became natural history classes!"
WATCH THE SPOTShe continues, "I think our approach of creating 2D environments, set up as layered planes, worked really well with our CG characters in this instance. So often, 2D concept frames end up looking better than the CG environments that are developed from them, so to work in this way, particularly with a tight schedule, was really effective. We've used this approach many times before, but previously with illustration; this was our first foray using photographic elements, and we're really pleased with the result."
Katie Mackin, Passion Pictures Melbourne EP says that there was a great appeal in the job's collaborative approach. "We've been working with The Royals on this concept since its very earliest iteration. The opportunity to inhabit such a fundamental role through the testing and scripting phases puts us in a great position to really breathe life into the idea. It's been a great experience across the board."
