UNIT9 Berlin recently worked with Skrillex to create an interactive mash-up of his latest music video ‘Doompy Poomp’, an artistic collaborative music video from the internationally-respected electronic music DJ with French directors Fleur & Manu and supported by VICE’s Creators Project.
Inspired by the infamous Groundhog Day movie, the music video is based on looping scenes that tell the story of a man with a mullet applying for a bank loan and being denied it over and over again. Lingering between absurdity and absolute brilliance, the video shows the same plot with small, yet hilarious variations highlighting the brilliant choice of characters. Robert Bader, creative partner of UNIT9 Berlin, says “GIFs are the perfect way to highlight the repetitiveness of the most iconic scenes."
Picking up on the playfulness of the video edit and the song, UNIT9 Berlin created an interactive mash-up of ‘Doompy Poomp': A keyboard based video player allows the user to recombine different scenes as GIFs to essentially create their own edit of it and share it with their social communities. These small “animations” can also be shared individually, on social media, or in text messages on mobile phones.
