Manners McDade's Cognitive Shift Recordings Releases First Album 'Overview Effect'

Today sees the worldwide release of Barcelona-born composer Roger Goula's debut release 'Overview Effect'. The record is the very first album from brand new label Cognitive Shift Recordings, a collaborative imprint from Manners McDade Music Publishing and One Little Indian Records.

The album is based on the theme of Space, and the psychological phenomenon experienced by astronauts when they see Earth ('the Pale Blue Dot') from their viewpoint in Space for the very first time: the Overview Effect.

Composer Roger Goula has previously scored acclaimed films such as Next Goal Wins, Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach, and The Hard Stop (both currently nominated for BIFAs).

The album is available digitally on all outlets, including Spotify (below), and on CD and Vinyl from all good retailers.

“[Overview Effect] explores a relationship between swells of warm strings and synthesizers—melodic, haunting, and eerie—a musical soundscape that paints a vivid picture of the void of space.” VICE

“The New Classical: how the next generation of composers or labels is challenging classical music’s status quo” The Independent

“Part of a wave of modern classical composers – think Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds – exploring fresh territory, Roger Goula has an approach all his own. Lush strings are set against corrosive, distorted noise, with the track pirouetting towards weightlessness.” Clash

“A beautifully wretched affair, enveloping the listener in shrouds of bone-chilling strings, swathes of monochrome ambience and a sprinkling of electronic debris” The Most Radicalist

“Mind blowing” Mary Anne Hobbs for BBC 6Music

“Canvasses of immense scope, stark beauty and – at times – thrilling drama” A Closer Listen
