"We’re very excited by ‘This Is England 90’ coming soon to Channel 4 and to get in the mood we thought we’d compile a playlist featuring some of the great songs from the decade that we publish. It also coincides with two recent catalogue signings we have made with Echobelly and Graham Crabb of Pop Will Eat Itself joining the Bucks roster.
The '90s was an incredible time for music, with independent labels taking over the mainstream and the old rock royalty being upstaged by new pretenders. Early '90s success and acclaim for bands such as East Village, Airhead and Kingmakers paved the way for an explosion in the British guitar scene with bands including Echobelly, The Auteurs & Lush taking centre stage in the mid-90s.
It wasn’t all indie as Roni Size took the Mercury Prize in 1997 with New Forms and pop was still a force with the rise of girl and boy bands such as Five & B*witched laying siege to the Top 10 and Rave culture having a big impact with Baby D topping the charts and Norman Cook warming up to dance-floor domination with his Pizzaman incarnation.
We’ve also included some later solo work by members of bands that helped shape the musical landscape of the decade including Brett Anderson, Martin Rossiter, Mark Gardener, Tim Burgess, Luke Haines and Sarah Cracknell of St Etienne."
