Canica Films' Maria Teresa Benvenuto showcases the many beautiful neighbourhoods of Peru's capital

Peru is known as a world-famous tourist destination. Its diverse locations range from deep, dense jungles to mountainous valleys, as well as arid deserts and beautiful virgin beaches. With such a wide array of beautiful vistas to be featured in audiovisual productions, it’s easy to overlook the possibilities of Lima as a premier shooting destination. The Peruvian capital city is often seen as a simple layover for tourists, but it actually contains some of the most interesting architecture in the Latin-American region. Its style ranges from classic colonial to more daring modern buildings. These varied urban landscapes provide the opportunity for Lima to be a stand-in for countless famous cities around the world; it’s a cost-effective alternative to shooting in places that would entail a more complicated production process.

Let’s take for example three of Lima’s most visited neighbourhoods: La Punta in El Callao, the highly-transited Barranco district and the traditional Centro or Town Center.

La Punta in El Callao

La Punta is an upper-middle class district that traditionally housed El Callao’s most distinguished aristocratic families. This is apparent in some of its architecture and the style of it’s plazas, which maintain colonial characteristics that make it easy to recreate historically accurate scenarios. It can also stand for other LATAM cities that have a shared cultural legacy with Lima, such as La Habana.

Barranco

Barranco is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Lima and maintains a certain bohemian charm that lingers amongst the most beautiful residential areas in the city.

Centro

Finally, the traditional City Center preserves some of the most authentic colonial architecture in all of South America and has colours and textures that could easily translate to major productions looking to recreate the region’s past.

The fact that Peru is an extremely cost-effective place to shoot in general, with no progressive over-time fees and no limits to the number of shooting hours per day, makes it only logical for Lima to become a premier destination for big productions looking for cheaper locations that can stand in for what the script demands. One no longer has to deal with bureaucratic nightmares to film in world-famous cities, when Lima has the chameleonic possibilities to fit all of your audiovisual demands.
