The team here at No Sheet is constantly talking about and immersed in music of all genres, which we truly love. From country to 80’s synth, the style of favourited music varies massively from person to person and keeps us curious. We’ll be getting a few volunteers to narrow down their most loved tracks to only five and posting them here on Little Black Book. Kicking off the impossible task of narrowing down all music ever made to their top five favourite songs is Production Coordinator, Elle Lord.
1. Erykah Badu: On & On
I have a weakness for a soul queen, and Erykah epitomises this. On & On reminds me of the first time I heard Baduizm at around 20 years old; in particular the live version when she explained the meaning of the songs. Since then I’ve been obsessed with her.
2. Bloc Party - This Modern Love
Along with a lot of teenagers growing up in the noughties, I was a die-hard indie girl trying to attend as many gigs as possible, coating the walls of my bedroom in ticket stubs creating what can only be described as a paper cave (much to the joy of my Mother). Trying to pick one song from this era is impossible, so I’ll go with one which I think was as relevant then as it is now.
3. Amy Winehouse - Stronger Than Me
I first saw this performed on Jools Holland’s late night show and was instantly hooked; Amy’s ability to sing like a true Jazz singer whilst retaining those cheeky modern day lyrics she’s known for, will never get old.
4. Basement Jaxx - Where’s Your Head At
At the tender age of 9 I heard this classic party anthem being blasted on every radio and it still rings out of club speakers today. It never fails to get everyone excited and some of my favourite memories of nights out are dancing to this one.
5. James Blake - Retrograde
Another game changing songwriter; James Blake had my attention from the minute I heard Limit to Your Love but Retrograde was the one which I couldn’t get off repeat. Again, picking just one of his songs has been very difficult!
