LBB’s Laura Swinton tries to quell her inner troll and embrace the good news

Tongues. When to bite them and when to let them wobble. It’s a balancing act that’s tricky to get right, but also kind of important in an industry built on relationships with human beings with actual feelings. Twice in the past week I’ve lapsed into tirade mode at the wrong moment and left my companions (audience?) with that look teenagers get in bad movies when they’ve been caught having sex. Startled. That’s the word I’m looking for. So, maybe I should exercise a little more discrimination about when I choose to let rip about self-serving industry circle jerks or English-mangling ‘global platforms’ (how does one ‘taste a feeling’ anyway? Are soft drinks brands now trying to stimulate mass synaesthesia?). Or indeed when I choose to infect my nearest and dearest with my neuroses about the state of the global economy. There’s a lot happening right now to wind up the most agreeable ad watcher. So with that in mind, here’s some good news.

Publicis Turns 90

Unless it’s an ad with a puppy in it, there are very few stories that trigger an audible ‘aww’ from myself or the rest of our totally hardbitten editorial team. The news that Publicis is going to provide funding and mentoring for 90 start ups as part of its 90th birthday celebrations, though, elicted all sorts of fuzzy feelings.

Agency Fight Night

In Cincinnati, three of the city’s biggest agencies will brawl in the boxing ring for an industry fight night. Now, I know contact sports are pretty controversial but this can only be cathartic. And comedy. And it’s reassuring to know that in one corner of the world, for one night only, the industry won't be holding back for diplomacy's sake.

Marcel Australia Opens Its Door

It’s been long-anticipated, but this week Marcel Australia opens its doors, with David Nobay at the helm as creative chairman. It’s great to see the return of David. Marcel Paris are killing it and we'll be watching to see how they shake things up in Australia. But most importantly… French and Australian isn’t a combination I’ve seen often so it's certainly going to be interesting.

We Survived Blue Monday!

Give yourselves a pat on the back people, the most miserable day of the year is behind us! Things can only get better, right? Are we wobbling on the verge of a possible global economic meltdown? Who cares! Don’t worry! We survived Blue Monday! And on the other side of things, if don’t particularly feel like you ‘survived’ and are actually feeling stressed out and crappy, NABs have published some excellent advice to help get you through.

England's 50 Most Creative Companies

Creative England has launched its report on the 50 most creative companies in England. Congratulations to Archers Mark for their inclusion, it's a well-deserved nod – and it is refreshing to see companies from outside of London get their moment in the spotlight. On the other hand, there are some pretty glaring omissions. But that’s just fodder for a lengthy debate over a bottle of red. Just the thing to while away the long January nights.
