Working on MusicMap often feels very much like being a sort of sonic cartographer. Every day is spent uncovering new music and joining the dots between different artists, placing the very best on our map in order to create a musical landscape that reflects the sound of the global underground.
While our extensive network of music scouts keep us readily supplied with updates from various territories, our work for brands such as adidas and Volotea means that we often dive even deeper to provide the most relevant music possible for territory-specific projects. Fortunately we have comfortable headphones as they’ve taken some serious punishment over the last twelve months...
Of course it’s impossible to post everything we love on the site, and it’s even harder to narrow down a year’s worth of discoveries to a single playlist. Nonetheless, we’ve given it a go, by selecting a favourite track that we’ve written about for every week of 2018, adding them all to the retrospective playlist you see before you. From Filipino lo-fi to Angolan-Polish Afro House, neo-soul from New Delhi to beats from Ulaanbaatar, these are the sounds that surprised and seduced us the most in 2018.
We hope you enjoy it and we look forward to sharing plenty more MusicMap discoveries with you throughout 2019.
