What seemed like the entire Melbourne creative
community flocked to The Wheeler Centre in the CBD last night for the
most recent MADC Presents talk by ex-JWT Worldwide CCO Matt Eastwood.
Flying from San Francisco where he presided over the MADC Stars judging,
Eastwood gave his Cannes speech 'Passion Trumps Talent'.
MADC
supporter agencies gathered earlier at The Wheeler Centre's underground
cocktail bar The Moat, and were treated to a few pre-drinks and canapés
and a chance to chat to Matt before his talk.
Beginning with an all too familiar scene from Step Brothers, where
Brennan (Will Ferrell) has his first job interview, Eastwood began by
talking about his path through the industry, from getting fired as a
junior, to consistently persisting, and crediting much of his success to
his passion.
The quirkiness and
diversity of Eastwood's
content, alongside some sound advice for what he wants when it comes to
hiring, resulted in a bunch of questions from the 200 plus crowd.
Says
Adrian Bosich, MADC president: "I really love seeing the Melbourne
advertising community coming together once again to inspire and
celebrate creativity. When I first
heard Matt give this talk at Cannes,
it cut through as a really motivating rallying cry for passion, and I
wanted the broader Melbourne community to hear it. It can become too
easy sometimes in our industry to become bogged down by the less
glamorous parts of our jobs - this talk helps reignite that creative
fire - to get back to that fiery passion."
Entertaining for over
an
hour, one thing became clear from Eastwood's message. There are a
lot of talented people in this industry, and he's known a bunch of them,
and seen them come and go. But the ones who stick around to see success
are those that truly care, and are passionate about what they do.
MADC
would like to give a special thanks to the sponsors of the event:
AIRBAG, Refinery.vfx, Bang Bang Studios and Esther Clerehan for bringing
Matt Eastwood over from the US and helping make such an educational and
inspirational event happen.
