Yanessa Lee, Account Service Intern at Mirum Hong Kong gives her thoughts on how to get the most of your internships
I have always been fascinated by the idea that after graduation, I would build my career in the fast-paced world of Asia’s most famous concrete jungle, Hong Kong.

As a commerce student in Canada, specializing in marketing and business technology, I decided that applying for an internship at a digital marketing agency in Hong Kong would give me valuable experience and insight into the global agency world. I’m happy to say that my time at Mirum Hong Kong as an Account Service Executive gave me invaluable skills in strategy building and client interaction, and has been a tremendous inspiration for my career goals.

On my first day at Mirum, I was greeted by friendly smiles and given a tour of all five floors of the office space. It was interesting to observe the different personalities of each department. The business and strategy team with their firm handshakes, the technology and innovation teams with their fun and quirky gadgets, and the creative department, with their decorated desk spaces. To top it off, a group of interns and I were welcomed by an induction lunch, where all the Mirum Hong Kong leaders, including CEO Win Mak, spoke about their work and shared inspiring words of advice. One lesson that resonated with me was: “Keep trying new things, fail fast, but learn faster.”

During my first week, I assisted with multiple clients, including Hong Kong International Airport, UnionPay and Target Insurance. After gaining a better understanding of the rhythm of the teams and the office, I was soon integrated into meetings with management-level colleagues and participated in client-pitching projects. I was also tasked with presentation building, industry-specific market research, and accompanying my team members to meet with potential clients.

A great part about working at Mirum is its broad network of talent, including J. Walter Thompson and WPP, and I was given the opportunity to engage with those teams as well. It was a truly rewarding process to witness all the hard work of the various departments and see how it comes together for quality project proposals. In addition to my accounts services responsibilities, I worked with the data analytics team to study metadata and SEO optimization through a site crawl of Hong Kong Tourism Board’s website.

Reflecting on my internship, I’m very appreciative of Mirum for providing me with encouragement and such a solid support system. I am thankful for the advisors who challenged me to build confidence, and trusted in my capabilities as a student intern.

My advice for future interns? Be confident and never underestimate your potential to contribute – there is value to be added from everyone, regardless of age or level of experience.
