Last night JWT’s Gravity Light project for Shell picked up one of only 13 White Pencils at the prestigious global D&AD Impact awards, D&AD’s awards recognising work that makes a positive difference to the world.
Created for Shell by
JWT Live, JWT London’s activation business, the campaign replaced dangerous and often deadly kerosene lamps in hundreds of thousands of homes in Africa with an affordable, safe and brighter light powered by gravity. Using a bag of rocks falling slowly to the floor the force of gravity can illuminate the light for hours.
The news follows the announcement earlier in the week that
Gravity Light had picked up two Golds (Energy & Utilities Event and Product Launch) and a Bronze (Use of Technology) in the Evcom awards.

80% of Kenya has no electricity, mostly relying on kerosene for light and cooking. Not only is kerosene unhealthy, but the lack of light reduces time for study and work. Gravity Light is an off grid light funded by Shell, using the power of gravity to create light. Gravity Light was launched in Kenya by visiting off grid communities and telling stories each night under the glow of a Gravity Light. Hundreds of thousands of people across Kenya were reached with a content driven campaign being created of the back of the campaign to engage and inspire global millennials.
