Derry made his directorial debut with the underwater short Johanna for Nowness

After a decade photographing the most famous faces on the planet, Ian Derry announced himself as a director last month, with the stunning underwater short Johanna, which sent ripples (no pun intended) around the industry when it landed on Nowness.

He has now been snapped up for UK representation by indie outfit Archer’s Mark and is already collaborating with founders Mike Brett and Steve Jamison on his next project. Coincidentally, the three had already met in 2014 - Ian photographed Mike and Steve when they were named BAFTA Breakthrough Brits - and have stayed in touch ever since.

“It was a strange feeling for Mike and I to be in front of camera,” said Jamison, “but Ian had that rare ability to put his subjects at ease and somehow made us look presentable too! We've been admirers of his stills work ever since and were absolutely blown away when we saw Johanna.

"As a debut film, it’s as impressive as anything we’ve seen in a very long time and shows Ian has more than just a great eye (he really does have a great eye) but he’s a brilliant storyteller too. It’s extraordinary he was able to bring that level of craft in such a challenging (frozen) environment and demonstrates an incredible confidence of vision. We’re excited to bring him onto our roster and can't wait to see what he creates next."

“Making that film was just the start,” says Derry. “It was such a rich, collaborative process that it instantly sparked a desire to explore more stories through film. When I looked at the calibre of directors on the Archer’s Mark roster and the work they were creating, I knew it was the right home for me to further develop my voice as a filmmaker.”
