Sony/ATV’s Ed Sheeran has won Songwriter of the Year at the Ivor Novello Awards for the second time in his career.
The Sony/ATV songwriter received the prestigious honour at the 63rd annual event, which was held on Wednesday at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. He is only the second songwriter this century to win this award more than once.
He also won the PRS for Music Most Performed Work award for his global hit “Shape Of You”, which was shortlisted in a category alongside his song “Castle On The Hill”
Sheeran’s latest Ivor Novellos successes follow a remarkable year in which industry trade organisation IFPI named him as the Global Recording Artist of the Year, while recognised his song “Shape Of You” as 2017’s biggest single globally and his album ÷ (Divide) as the year’s top album. He has also scored hits in the past year as a songwriter for other artists including Eminem, Liam Payne and Rita Ora.
He had previously been awarded two Ivor Novellos, the first in 2012 for his breakthrough hit “The A Team”, which won Best Song Musically & Lyrically.
Fellow Sony/ATV songwriter Billy Bragg won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music award in recognition of his songs including “There Is Power In A Union” and “A New England”, while Cathy Dennis was awarded Outstanding Song Collection for hits such as “Can’t Get You Head Of My Head”, “I Kissed A Girl” and “Toxic”, which are all published by Sony/ATV. Lionel Richie, whose Commodores catalogue is handled by Sony/ATV, received the PRS for Music Special International Award.
Through the company’s Media Rights admin deal with Forge Entertainment, the composer Dan Jones won the Best Television Soundtrack award for his score to the BBC programme The Miniaturist.
