Eastern Europe Becomes a Preferred Alternative for Producers

With production budgets tightening across the globe PSN share their knowledge of global production trends – all eyes on Eastern Europe

With production budgets tightening globally, producers are looking for the best rates and the best quality production options. There was a time when tightening budgets saw producers turn to close-proximity shoot options that minimised travel costs. However, a globalised economy, speedy developing countries and recent radical currency fluctuations in big markets have allowed some countries to provide high quality servicing at a much lower cost point than others. Eastern Europe is one of those regions.

Over the past year, we’ve seen a considerable rise in the number of shoot enquiries for the region. Producers are coming from as far as the US, looking to shoot in countries like Bulgaria, Romania and Poland. Despite increased travel time and costs, they can easily make savings of up to 50% compared to shooting locally.

Interestingly, we’ve also seen a rise in the number of producers seeking local production talent. Many of the countries in Eastern Europe have been producing amazing creative work and that gives producers the confidence to source local DOPs, art directors and even directors.  Flying in select department heads remains an option but not a necessity.

Scandanavian Airlines - PSN Romania

Speaking to our Partner Giuliano Doman at PSN Romania, he refers to servicing a shoot with Bacon for Scandinavian Airlines that required four large scale sets, a hotel room, Turkish mountains, an airplane interior and an ‘under the sea’ scene. This was made possible at a fraction of the cost of shooting around the world or in staging it in Scandinavia.

Oral B  - PSN  Poland

P&G tapped our partner in Poland for an Oral B project adapted for distribution in nine different countries.  Production required 3 sets over 22 days at a cost that could’ve been double or more if not consolidated and shot entirely in Poland.

McDonald's - PSN Bulgaria

TBWA\Paris even brought their New York shoot for McDonald’s US to Sofia, Bulgaria. For the French agency, it was a natural choice. Sofia’s backlots often double for New York and the cost of running a production there was noticeably cheaper than shooting in the US.

Heinz - PSN Ukraine

Agencies in large markets are also making bold shoot location choices despite politics. The Russian team producing Heinz’s (Kraft) table top ads have taken their past 3 shoots to neighbouring Ukraine. Our partner in Ukraine, Dmitry Sukhanov, explained that costs for decoration, set up and a lot of Food/FX shots came in at a much lower cost point, even when allowing for agency travel costs.

Amidst a turbulent worldwide economy, Eastern Europe has become a go-to choice of high quality, cost effective production.  And PSN Partners strategically positioned worldwide help ensure producers shooting overseas remain up to speed on other emerging options where they can achieve the best creative results for their available budget.
