Growing independent agency expands creative team

San Francisco independent advertising agency Duncan Channon today announced the hire of Katrina Michie as associate creative director. Michie’s hire marks the latest addition to Duncan Channon’s creative team during a major growth period for the agency.

Michie joins Duncan Channon after nearly three years as a freelance associate creative director and art director with agencies such as Eleven and Jack Morton Worldwide. Her career includes roles at Digitas North America, Tribal DDB and Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners. She has worked on major brands including Google, eBay, HP, Bud Light, Pepsi and Taco Bell.

“I know it’s press release table stakes to say ‘we’re thrilled Kat’s here,’ but we’re legit thrilled that she’s here!” said John Kovacevich, executive creative director, Duncan Channon. “She got her start in digital and social and then expanded into TV and other traditional mediums, so she knows how to craft great ideas for the places people actually see them.”

“She also shares our belief that advertising can ‘do better’ and, when done right, can reflect real truth and even shape culture,” added Kovacevich. “We look forward to her pushing us and our clients to explore new territories that you don't always see in advertising.”

Michie’s hire marks the eighth addition to Duncan Channon’s creative team in 2018. DC has just added Rakuten as a client, along with a soon-to-be announced win. In October, the agency tapped Goodby Silverstein & Partners veteran John Kovacevich to join Anne Elisco-Lemme as executive creative director. DC also added design director Jennifer Kellogg; senior designer Alexandra Camacho; senior art directors Turner Johnson and Adam Zash; senior copywriter Andy Whalen; and copywriter John Evans. Michie, who will report to Kovacevich, will work on a variety of clients, including John Muir Health and cloud-based HR provider TriNet.

“It’s kind of a unicorn to find an agency that does good work and has a good culture,” said Michie. “DC makes work with empathy and truth, plus their clients really trust them. It’s also refreshing to see DC leadership of all genders prioritise working hard equally with time for family and other interests.”

Beyond her creative duties, Michie actively looks to collaborate with and mentor young creatives. Michie oversaw the DigitasLBi Miami Ad School lab program, where she provided mentorship and direction for the interns. She also volunteers for First Graduate, a San Francisco-based program that helps finish high school and become the first in their families to graduate from college. Kat earned her Master’s Degree in Advertising from University of Texas at Austin.
