Sam Bould, Samantha Neal, Ivana Bobic and Fouad Gaber chair panel aimed at aspiring editors and young filmmakers

Last night, Cut+Run hosted Deep Cuts.2, a panel for aspiring editors and filmmakers.

Created in association with the UKMVAs, the panel featured Cut+Run editor Sam Bould, freelance editor Samantha Neal, director Ivana Bobic and Fouad Gaber, the very talented winner of the ‘Best Editing in a Video’ award, for his work on Chaka Kahn’s ‘Like Sugar’.

The panel members showcased music videos by Royal Blood, Stormzy, Nothing But Thieves and Chaka Kahn, explaining their thought process, technique and how they told the story, with the lively discussion chaired by Cut+Run’s Martin Macnamara.

Aimed at aspiring editors and young filmmakers, the audience consisted of industry newcomers, students and other creative minds looking to hear insights and advice from the experts.

Sam Bould recounted feeling liberated by approaching the Royal Blood promo from an editors perspective, as an action movie first, and music video second. Fouad Gaber discussed finding the sweet spot of natural and loose rhythm, in keeping with the dancer’s characters in ‘Like Sugar’. Ivana Bobic talked about her preference for narrative-driven films and how she enjoys taking her audience on a journey, and Samantha Neal discussed the importance of narrative and storytelling, even in a classic, performance style music video.
