A writer by trade, Zak spent the early part of his career at notable agencies such as Chiat/Day and BBDO. In 1999, he joined a small boutique shop called Taxi and, under his creative leadership, helped lead the agency to international acclaim on the world stage and seven Agency of the Year titles locally.
During his career, Zak has been ranked amongst the world’s top Creative Directors, had multiple campaigns in the Gunn Report’s top five globally and been named Canada’s Creative Director of the Year numerous times.
Since 2008, he has been busy building Zulu Alpha Kilo into a globally awarded 130-person independent. Headquartered in Toronto, his eponymous shop (ZAK = Zulu Alpha Kilo in the NATO phonetic alphabet) has been recognized by Campaign UK and Ad Age as one of the world’s leading independent shops. In 2016, Zulu garnered international headlines when it won Ad Age’s Small Agency of the Year top honours, the first time a non-U.S. shop had ever won. A year later, Zulu repeated as Ad Age’s International Small Agency of the Year. In 2018, Zak was featured in the Top 100 Innovators issue of Forbes magazine.
Over the years, he has been a judge at all the world’s top awards shows, including Cannes, One Show, D&AD and the LIAs.
