The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, with the support of RPA, is working to combat childhood cancer with their recently established Imaginary Friend Society. Amongst 20 kid-friendly, heartwarming films created by a variety of partners, ‘Losing Your Hair’ uses the power of design and our friendly animated character, Jerry, to educate and empower those navigating through childhood cancer. In order to emulate the look and feel of claymation, the design and animation team created the film entirely in Cinema 4D. The artists maintained the medium’s traditional stop motion appearance by animating the hero character on 2s (every other frame), while keeping the camera and light animation on 1s to ensure smooth transitions. During the look development process, additional characters were creatively incorporated into the story line. Because there was so much animation to be done in a short timeframe, the team had to maximize efficiency without compromising quality. An example of this was the utilization of the character Sam to tell a story of hair loss through polaroid images. Many of the other character designs were included to embellish Jerry’s backstory, as well as enhance his environment.
