As much as we at Jumbla love working on upbeat or light-hearted videos, we won’t shy away from using our creativity to help address serious issues. In some instances, if executed well, animation is a powerful medium with uniquely influential power. Child Wise is one admirable organisation we were able to help, by creating a six-minute story-based animation that would be watched by primary school children, aged between five and 11. A common misconception among victims of child abuse is that they think they’ll get in trouble if they speak about. This video would explain to children that it’s OK to come forward and tell a trusted adult if they’ve been abused. Our producer Charlotte said it was an interesting project because it was such a sensitive issue. “Animation really enabled us to put that difficult conversation into a video that’s quite understandable for children,” she said. “We really saw the importance of a video like this. In some ways it’s perceived as a taboo topic, teachers often struggle to talk about with kids. A video like this takes the responsibility and pressure away from teachers, when it comes to a conversation that’s incredibly important to have.” It’s easy to see why Child Wise opted for animation: key to the brief was delivering the messages in an engaging and non-threatening way. The team at Jumbla took this a step further, creating a visually captivating piece that immediately appeals to kids. It’s a project we’re proud of, because it engages children in the discussion and sends an important message without scaring them. The video will be shown to children during the Child Wise’s “Wise Child Protective Behaviours Program” sessions and also shown to kids by their school teachers.
