Toombs was most recently ECD and Head of Design at Anomaly New York

Wieden+Kennedy today announced that Ian Toombs has joined the agency’s Shanghai office as Executive Creative Director, working alongside Managing Director Bryan Tilson.

The appointment comes as Yang Yeo, W+K Shanghai’s Executive Creative Director since 2014 departs the agency for personal reasons. “We’re grateful to Yang for his creative leadership and dedication to transitioning his successor. The Wieden+Kennedy family wishes him all the best as he returns home to Singapore,” said Tilson.

“We’re incredibly excited to have Ian joining W+K Shanghai. He’s a world-class creative leader with a strong design background and work that has a fresh, infectious energy and edge about it. He’s exceptionally talented and we expect to see a new chapter of great creative work in China under his leadership,” Tilson commented.

Toombs began his career in New York City working for design shops including Pentagram, Interbrand and Wolff Olins. He joined Anomaly as Art Director in 2006, later becoming Executive Creative Director and Head of Design of the New York office. During his career at Anomaly he helped grow the creative department from five to over fifty creatives and designers, winning new business, awards and ultimately doubling the company in size. He left Anomaly in July of 2014 on an ambitious sabbatical, travelling the world for two years before joining W+K.

Ian’s body of work includes effective, popular multi-platform communications campaigns for brands including Converse, Diesel, Budweiser, Captain Morgan, Google, Renaissance Hotels, Jawbone, P&G, The New Museum and The One Show. He ran Anomaly’s flagship Converse account from 2008-2014, helping the company more than quadruple its revenue and extend itself globally into Latin America, Europe and Asia. His work has been awarded in all major shows including two gold One Show pencils and a Grand Prix in Cannes for Diesel’s BE STUPID campaign.

“I could not be more excited about joining Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai. I’m adventurous by nature, so the opportunity to lead the office of such a great creative agency in one of Asia’s most dynamic cities is a dream job for me. I’m looking forward to fully immersing myself in China’s vibrant and unique landscape of creativity and culture, furthering W+K’s legacy in China, and helping to redefine how a great creative agency operates in APAC.” Toombs said.
