INFLUENCER: Sentric Music's Simon Pursehouse on a few sampled gems that won't cost you a fortune

A couple of years ago I was sat having a leisurely Sunday afternoon pint with some good friends at a wonderful watering hole in Liverpool called The Shipping Forecast. Bliss, right? The effortlessly, achingly trendy DJ comprised his set of tunes which had been sampled by songs in the following years whose fame had usurped the originals in such a way that your passive music fan wouldn’t have even realised the latter of the two ditties even lifted from the former in the first place.

Now, there are many tracks that fall into this bracket which we all know (Kanye’s Gold Digger for example), but during this set he dropped a smorgasbord of songs that I had no idea had sampled records of yesteryear. And what’s worse, being sat with a bunch of fellow music industry tosspots I couldn’t even let on to this fact, such the potential vituperation I could have received from my counterparts for not knowing that “XXX sampled XXX, and I just *can’t* believe you didn’t know that, Pursehouse! Stick to your Eurovision knowledge and leave the deep cuts to the *real* music fans” (side note, Eurovision is amazing and I will fight anyone in a car park who disagrees).

Now to stress, I’m certainly not even edging towards calling Kanye & Co myopic in any sense of the word, if anything they breathe fresh life into hidden gems that deserve a bigger audience and by doing this, they give you lot in the world of advertising a way to save some money on that pesky music budget of yours (well, I assume you see it as ‘pesky’ as Christ knows I argue with enough of you about it on a daily basis, eh?)

Take a moment to think about the song Ain’t No Other Man by Christina Aguilera. You got it? Now let me take a punt that what just happened in your head was her vocal warbling/flaring (delete as personal taste dictates) in the intro followed by that brass section stab, yes?

Well that trumpet is from the indefatigably catchy ‘Happy Soul With A Hook’ by Dave ‘Baby’ Cortez…

Want to license that for your next campaign? It’s going to set you back about half the cost of Christina yet you’ll still get the recognition that the Dirrrrrrty pop purveyor’s version would get you as well. Nifty eh?

Now sit back and have a good old muse about Bound 2 by Kanye West. You there? Let me guess, you tried to falsetto “bound to fall in love” whilst picturing the man himself pretending to ride a motorcycle whilst his inexplicably topless wife is cuddled next to him, seemingly looking for warmth?

Well that vocal hook is taken from Bound by Ponderosa Twins Plus One...

Want to use Kayne on that advert of yours? Even those comedy cheques they used to give out to football pools winners wouldn’t be big enough mate, but you could get those Ponda Twins at a snip of the price. Cashback.

Finally, your man Mr Jay Z with songstress Alicia Key’s Empire State of Mind. Now I don’t know about you, but when I mime along to that I like to combine the duo by dropping the peak of my cap whilst also air-piano-ing the riff and, if no one else is around, spitting along with my infamous trademark Yorkshire flow. Jay ‘Z-ee by gum’, if you will.

Said ivory tickling hook is taken from the utterly gorgeous Love On A Two Way Street by The Moments...

Want to pay for Jay Z’s version? It’s going to cost you an untold amount of Tidal memberships, whereas those Moments gents won’t set you back the cost of a good seat at the upcoming Beyoncé tour (eye watering stuff, those tickets, let me tell you).

So there you go. Who ever said that recognisable tunes will always cost you millions? Come see us at Sentric towers and we’ll soundtrack your next project with something that’ll make your budget as happy as your ears.
