Bird to lead agency with Lauren Miller as managing director

VMLY&R announced today that Jon Bird has been promoted to chief retail and commerce officer. He will head up a global practice for the agency, creating commerce experiences for today’s connected brands.

The practice will work at the intersection of digital and commerce and employ elements of e-commerce, connected retail and relationship marketing for VMLY&R clients. The team will have a major presence in the US as well as representation in all major markets, including China. The practice is currently working with clients in the US including Hershey’s, General Mills, Office Depot and United Rentals.

Lauren Miller has been named managing director of the practice and will work alongside Bird. Miller will manage the practice as a whole, plus direct specialist commerce strategists who will focus on areas including automotive, CPG and health.

Prior to being named chief retail and commerce officer, Bird spent two years as executive director, global retail and shopper marketing at VML, working on innovative retail programs such as digital ‘endless aisles’ and interactive induction cooktops for Electrolux/Frigidaire. In the past year, Bird also co-authored a WPP/VML report entitled The Third Era of Digital Retail with David Roth, CEO of The Store WPP, EMEA and Asia. Before joining VML, Bird served as the head of Labstore, Y&R’s global retail and shopper marketing division.

Prior to relocating to the US from Australia in 2014, Bird was a founding partner and served as executive chairman of Y&R Group’s IdeaWorks, which became the region’s foremost specialist retail marketing agency.

Bird is a weekly contributor to Forbes sharing his insights on retail and regularly speaks at events and conferences all over the world from Sydney to Santiago.
