Tasty Eyeball Treats to Look For at Cannes 2018

The interweb is awash with predictions aplenty. Wise sages imparting their wisdom on what will or will not win so I didn’t think you’d appreciate reading another one. Instead, I thought I’d explore some of the alternative things on the fringe that deserve to be in contention for your eyeballs’ gaze. 

Cinema Les Arcades is minutes away from the Palais. It’s a cute little picture house and is home to two film events during the week. She Says and Voice Of a Woman are showcasing the best short films, branded content and advertising made by women in the last 12 months. The screening will be followed by live interviews and a panel discussion. The VOWSS, take place on the 19th June between 3-6pm at Cinema Les Arcades, 77, rue Felix-Faure 06400 Cannes.

At 11am on Thursday the 21st, the Straight 8 guys will be screening 22 films from adland’s finest with the Agency Shootout. Straight 8 takes film making back to its roots and packs it to the brim with risk. They give you a 8mm cartridge, you shoot at 24fps and have to do everything in camera. No editing or post production, just raw unfiltered creativity. The first time the filmmakers see their creation is on Les Arcades’ silver screen. It’s all for charity so join them and enjoy a Bloody Mary to nurse your rosé hangover.

There’s also a little football tournament going on so if you need your fix of Messi, Ronaldo and Southgate get yourself along to The Drum Arms at the Quays Irish Pub. Looks like the opening party with the England game on the big screen is already oversubscribed but get yourself on the subs bench and you might just get in to the game.

And if you want to really give your eyeballs a treat why not indulge in a classic game of spotting blokes in f**king red trousers. I’m sure Cannes will be awash with dandys, so that just leaves me to ponder who will take the Red Trouser Grand Prix? Photos to the editor please.
