Syncbubble Dubbles: How IKEA Lamp Was Totally Transformed by LBB Readers

Grand Prix-winning tale of love and loss from Spike Jonze gets a musical revamp

A trip to IKEA usually signifies an imminent re-decoration and a DIY spree. How appropriate, then, that last week Laura Gregory of Great Guns and RSA Film’s Kai-Lu Hsiung gave the Swedish home brand it’s very own musical makeover. The Spike Jonze directed spot ‘Lamp’ (which won the 2003 Cannes Grand Prix) was ideal fodder for our ongoing Syncbubble Dubbles exploration of the power of music in advertising – after all when the main protagonist is an inanimate object, music has to work all the harder.

Following Kai and Laura’s killer re-interpretations (which you can check out here), the LBB audience swamped Syncbubble to have a go themselves. We’ve picked out the very best below.

In the meantime, if you want to have a go, head over to Syncbubble Dubbles. It couldn't be simpler: pick an ad, search for a track using Syncbubble's revolutionary technology or even upload your own composition and create a playlist.

We Love Lamp - Top IKEA Lamp Redubs

Staff Pick (Syncbubble)

Andy Williams, Love Story;  Max Richter; A Sudden Manhattan of the Mind

You can't ever tire of Andy Williams. Honda, M&S, to name a couple of recents, have both bathed in his glory and we think that this level of campness really adds something to this spot.

On the other hand, trying to find something modern and characterful is often a lot harder than old and characterful. We felt that this Max Richter track seemed to do something brilliant to these pictures.

Chris Read (Composer)

Dimitry, Another

I think the ad works better with sinister undertones as opposed to the original’s sadness and melancholy. I decided to go for something creepy but not too unnerving. Nothing says ‘hauntingly fun’ more than a Theremin.

Robert Stern (Litmus Films)

Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks OST) - Laura’s Theme

I plumped for a classic piece of TV music from the 90s. Laura's Theme was the first thing that came to my mind as it is so unashamedly saccharine and sentimental. Seemed to fit the plight of our poor lamp protagonist!
