Emerging singer-songwriter Izzy Bizu performed an intimate showcase at Wave Music this week for another event in their ‘Après-Session’ series.
Izzy’s most recent single White Tiger received over 65,000 streams on Spotify alone in just 3 days. Her recent appearance on Later… With Jools Holl and drew rave reviews (“The only artist worth mentioning from last night’s show” – The405) and, having recently signed a US publishing and worldwide record deal, the excitement and buzz that Izzy currently exudes meant the show was a genuine treat for Wave’s staff members & their clients.
With her first UK headline tour to come in January, the session was a chance to perform to a smaller crowd: “I like intimate gigs. We used to have these house parties and jams where we’d have 50 people at our house and I’d sing, Ben and Mika would play something and it was really chilled,” says Izzy. “The intimate gigs remind me of that, you can connect more with people at smaller venues.”
On getting into music, Izzy adds: “I did my first open mic three years ago and that’s when I decided I wanted to be a singer. Before that I was more into song-writing and poems, but I wanted to showcase my songs. I love to write, and poetry was my way of being creative at school – I used to write haikus! I take inspiration from my environment, from personal experiences and the random people who I meet.”
The Après-Session series continues, boasting a history of impressive high-achieving performers. Previous performer SOAK has this week been nominated for the Mercury Prize, NONOTAK have gone on to create sonic exhibitions for brands across the world, and Grandmaster Flash continues to be an inspirational hip-hop legend.
Sarah Giles, Creative Producer at Wave Music, and creator of the sessions comments: “When you’re working around the clock on your own creative projects, it’s easy to forget that you’re having fun - and why you do it. The Après-Session series allows people to step back and enjoy other people’s creativity - a reminder that we’re really lucky to be where we are and that it's worth it. Particularly when it’s someone as talented (and quite frankly, amazing) as Izzy - we’re thrilled that she’s come to share her talent for us to appreciate.”
Izzy’s most recent single, White Tiger, is available now.
