Sachintra Maweekumbura wins competition

Executive Creative Director at Saatchi & Saatchi Sri Lanka, Carlos Anuncibay, was recently selected as one of the judges for the Sri Lankan edition of the global Red Bull Doodle Art Competition. With some of his work exhibited at the V&A Museum in London, Carlos’ rich background in art brought a unique level of valuable insight to the competition.

Red Bull Doodle Art has inspired students from boring lectures to working individuals catching a moment of spare time to pick up their pens and let their minds wander off into a world of their own. Doodlers have been scribbling away in several countries for the past eight years, with 2014 being the first time that Red Bull put the competition on a global stage, setting up a gallery of winning doodles from around the world in Cape Town, South Africa – this year’s World Design Capital.

Carlos was on a judging panel that consisted of renowned creative professionals at Sri Lanka’s National Doodle Art Gallery. The judges deliberated to select a winner out of 20 finalists who made the cut from a pool of over 250 entries, making this Sri Lanka’s largest-ever competition of its kind.

The national winner, Sachintra Maweekumbura, who is currently awaiting his acceptance offer to study Agriculture, travelled all the way to Colombo from the hill capital of Kandy just to attend the competition. His victory earned him the opportunity to travel to Cape Town between October 24th and 26th to visit the inaugural international gallery of winning doodles, all vying for the global grand prize of being featured on exclusive merchandise for the world-famous energy drink.

Commenting on the competition and what it means for Sri Lanka, Carlos said “Red Bull has given Sri Lankans a spectacular international platform to express their artistic abilities. The country has an abundance of untapped creative talent, and as part of an agency that believes in the unreasonable power of creativity, I’m extremely glad that we could play a part in giving them this great opportunity to showcase Sri Lankan creativity on a world stage.”
