Brazilian design studio joins production company’s London roster

Passion Pictures are pleased to announce that Brazilian design studio Lobo have joined their London roster.

Founded in 1994 by Mateus de Paula Santos and architecture graduate Nando Cohen, Lobo was originally named Coiote, after Wile E. Coyote from the Road Runner cartoon. “It was a homage to his relentless, yet somehow misguided, creativity” but for reasons the partners can’t remember exactly it was changed to Lobo, which is Portuguese for  “wolf”.

The studio has a large in-house team although the scale of talent can adapt according to the individual project’s requirements. Mateus comments that they ‘seek to explore different techniques, incorporating various talents from the most diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. We believe that it helps us keep a fresh approach to every new assignment, focusing on the client’s needs rather than trying to impose our own style on them’.

Lobo have a special fondness for what they consider their “turning point” projects or jobs that changed the course of the company’s history. The first of it’s kind for the studio was the ‘Video Computer System’ music video which they made for Brazilian duo Golden Shower. The project was an after-hours labor of love that ended up winning an MTV Brazil award and became viral in 2000 an incredible five years before the launch of YouTube. This exposure won them their first international commissions (music videos for European electronic acts Ural 13 Diktators and Legowelt), which in turn led to their first international representation and a series of projects for Diesel that made the studio renowned as purveyors of cutting-edge, innovative graphic work.

Creative Executive Producer, Loic Francois Mairie Dubois adds ‘but we like to say that our favorite project is always the latest, and right now it’s the Coca-Cola spot we did in celebration of Mother’s Day. It’s the first time a Brazilian team was responsible for a Polar Bear spot, so it was an honor and responsibility.’

Lobo’s Cartoon Network ‘Saving Toys Since 1993’ won a yellow pencil at D&AD and two of their projects Bassawards ‘Call for entries’ and MTV ‘Sex’ are in this year’s Annecy festival.  Passion Picture’s Executive Producer, Alex Webster comments ‘Lobo are a great addition to our strong London roster, we are very excited to have them on-board, especially at a time when Brazil’s creative offerings are going from strength to strength and the country is really stepping into the spotlight’, whilst Mateus adds ‘we look forward to the creative projects that UK agencies have to offer and we hope to add a piece of Brazil to them!’
