National Film Board of Canada Shares Expertise in Digital Storytelling

Digital studio heads Hugues Sweeney and Rob McLaughlin will speak at Doc Fortnight 2017: MoMA’s International Festival of Nonfiction Film and Media

A world leader in new advances in interactive and immersive storytelling, the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) next month, sharing its digital expertise as part of Doc Fortnight 2017: MoMA’s International Festival of Nonfiction Film and Media, February 16–26.

Hugues Sweeney and Rob McLaughlin, executive producers of the NFB’s Digital Studios in Montreal and Vancouver, will be in New York City for an animated presentation and discussion on the NFB’s pioneering contributions to today’s global media ecosystem. From interactive documentaries (A Journal of Insomnia, Bear 71) to mobile stories (Barcode, Soldier Brother), to public installations (Megaphone, Circa 1948) and virtual and augmented reality (Way to Go, The Enemy, Cardboard Crash, The Unknown Photographer), they’ll present NFB works that demonstrate a wide range of creative and  innovative technological approaches to factual and documentary storytelling. 

The Doc Fortnight Festival was founded in 2001, and each year continues to showcase an international selection of recent, outstanding documentary features and shorts on the creative edge of the medium. The program covers an array of subjects and styles, with films by both established and emerging filmmakers, many of whom attend the Festival.

The NFB has a long history of fearlessly innovating with emerging audiovisual techniques and tools in the production of its works, whether it was advancing the movement towards direct cinema, leading in the development of 3D film, early IMAX technology, computer animation, and more. Since 2008, the NFB has been fully committed to exploring the creative application of today’s internet, mobile and VR technologies and their impact on story, art and community.
