Moderat's VR Music Video Takes You on a Trippy Sci-fi Adventure

The film was written and directed by Mate Steinforth, director and partner at Sehsucht’s Berlin office, with the animation and design work created by Sehsucht’s inhouse design, VFX and production teams.

Steinforth’s script takes inspiration from both the lyrics of the track and from current affairs, resulting in an imaginative and politically charged narrative. Set in an dystopian desert environment, the VR experience follows our protagonist Remaas and his brother Neab. Both teenage slaves who spend their days harvesting crystals from a vast grey landscape.

The bounty they collect is to be given as an offering to a tribal deity, who resides in a shrine guarded by masked sentinels and constantly under attack from a rival army of drones. Their journey to deliver the crystals, sees the brothers facing the threat of a violent reality and the tough choice of staying on the right path. A duality enhanced by the black and white design of the animation, purposefully reduced to reference a retro computer game, is a beautiful example of how the VR platform can be used to take the viewer on an emotive storytelling journey.

‘Reminder tells the story of the pressures and struggles that eventually push our protagonist to his extreme. I found this a particularly relevant theme, with so much being said about suicide bombers and terrorism in the news. To be able to tell this story in VR and to take viewers further into a world we have created is something very exciting for me and I look forward to using the platform further. ’ Says Mate Steinforth, Director.
