Location Scotland Ensures ‘Snow’ Chance a Blizzard Will Stop Bank of Scotland Shoot
When heavy snow struck the UK in January, the whole nation was smothered beneath a white blanket putting the filming of Bank of Scotland’s ‘Decisions Well Made’ campaign in doubt. Involved from the beginning of the 4-day shoot, Location Scotland (LS), the Edinburgh based Service Production Company, went into rescue mode. Nothing would stop the filming take place, not if LS could help it.
With the production team, including LS Head of Production Sarah Drummond, based in a remote – not to mention snowy – location, the search had to be co-ordinated from the company’s Edinburgh headquarters.
Utilising their strong relationships with the Scottish authorities and with a vast array of contacts to tap into, LS launched an against-all-odds search for a snow plough. The local police and all the local councils, alongside a host of private hire companies and personal contacts, were brought on board in an attempt to track one down.
With all hands on deck, and seemingly all of the council’s ploughs on the roads, the team worked tirelessly and eventually LS were successful, finding an elusive plough to ensure that the RKCR/Y&R commercial could be shot.
Glynn and his bright yellow plough drove over 100 miles on Thursday night, from Edinburgh to Glen Etive, and worked to clear the road so the exterior shoot could commence on the Friday.
“We finally tracked down a plough in Edinburgh but, of course, the shoot was in Glen Etive which was three hours away,” says Sarah Drummond, Head of Production at Location Scotland. “When it arrived, it ploughed the whole night, right through from 8 in the evening to 6 the next morning. Nick Goldsmith (Producer for Somesuch) and I were checking out the progress throughout the evening and we were delighted when, at 6AM on Friday morning, the road was lovely and clear for the crane to move into position and get the shoot underway.”
Sonny Botero, Agency Producer at RKCR/Y&R, adds, “Last minute weather conditions didn’t faze the LS team for one second. Using their strong network of local contacts, they quickly and calmly organised a snow plough to clear the crossroads in order to shoot the following morning. The team went the extra mile, always with a smile on their face and every request was met! I cannot recommend LS highly enough - professional and positive, their production knowledge, team and locations are unparalleled."
In the meantime the Art Department and 3 extra sparks were mobilised from Glasgow, which is 3 hours away, and the scheduled re-worked to pull the interior day forward from Saturday to Thursday.
Fronted by Braveheart and Game of Thrones star James Cosmo, the Scottish campaign was to launch in March and included two TV spots – directed by Nick Gordon – as well as radio, online, press and social media activity.
Having been confirmed for the project by Somesuch, LS began work on the commercial in December 2014, scouting potential locations between Christmas and New Year. From the Borders to the Highlands, West to East coast, sourcing an office in Glasgow, a house in Ballachulish (near Glencoe) and the stunning exterior crossroads in Glen Etive; many locations were sourced for the shoot.
Alongside sourcing the ideal locations, the LS team provided full production services, including casting, crew, camera, lighting and grip equipment bookings, set design, costume, logistics and accommodation.
The snow wasn’t the only challenge facing the team, though. The golden eagle, hired for its majestic features, succumbed to stage fright and flew into a nearby tree, refusing to return. Comedy capers ensued as the handler – and any other willing production hand – was forced to start climbing and eventually the Eagle was coaxed back to ground.
“Sarah, Wendy and the rest of the crew are not only brilliant at production, they are also the nicest bunch of people to hang out with too,” says Nick Goldsmith, Producer for Somesuch. “From having to keep snowy roads open through the night, to trying to recapture a golden eagle that decided it didn’t fancy performing, everything is always done with a smile and it makes all the difference.”
