Post house works on six-part mini series set in Canberra and starring Jackie Weaver

Currently screening on Foxtel’s Showcase, Cutting Edge recently worked on the political thriller Secret City, a six-part mini series based on the novels, The Marmalade Files and The Mandarin Code, written by Chris Uhlmann and Steve Lewis. With a stellar ensemble cast, the series is headed by Anna Torv, Jackie Weaver, Alan Dale and Dan Wyllie.

Beneath the placid facade of Canberra, amidst rising tension between China and America, senior political journalist Harriet Dunkley uncovers a secret city of interlocked conspiracies, putting innocent lives in danger, including her own.

Matchbox Pictures commissioned Cutting Edge creative director Finnegan Spencer to create purpose built opening titles for the show, while colourist Dwaine Hyde handled grading with online led by Jo Spillane. Cutting Edge also provided editorial, conform and delivery.

Finnegan Spencer said the brief for the opening title concept was to visualise the city of Canberra through dense fog; partially obscuring reality from clear view.

“The title was a great project to work on, but as the series shoot had finished before we started production, we had to create all of the scenes in 3D, including some of the characters,” he explained.

“In the end, rebuilding cast members from stills projected on 3D models worked out really well, as it gave the title a very eerie style that fitted perfectly with the mood of the series.”
